Baz Luhrmann’s ‘Romeo + Juliet’ 20th Anniversary

On November 1, 1996, Baz Luhrmann’s updated version of William Shakespeare’s tragic love story Romeo + Juliet was released and became a pop culture phenomenon with the MTV generation.

It was also the film that made Leonardo DiCaprio a star and gave him the status as a heartthrob, until the release of Titanic the following year which catapulted him into the stratosphere.

The film also starred Claire Danes as Juliet (to Leo’s Romeo), John Leguizamo, Harold Perrineau, Brian Dennehy, Paul Sorvino and Jesse Bradford.
