Today marks 20 years since the release of Spice, the debut album from the Spice Girls!
Since November 4, 1996, the album has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide.Seven weeks after its release, the Spice Girls beat the title held by The Beatles for becoming the fastest selling British music group after selling 1.8 million records.
The main focus of the album centered on the “girl power” philosophy, a term used for female empowerment, which was first introduced by the Girls in their first single “Wannabe.”
Spice produced four number one singles: “Wannabe,” “Say You’ll Be There,” “2 Become 1” and “Mama/Who Do You Think You Are.”
The first two singles have already celebrated their 20th year milestone since their releases, while “2 Become 1” turns 20 in December followed by the next single (which was released as a double A-side) in March of 2017.
Three of the Spice Girls, Mel B (Scary Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice) and Geri Horner (Ginger Spice), were expected to go on tour this year to celebrate their 20th anniversary, but has been pushed back to hopefully next year.
