Remembering Selena 22 Years Later

Friday, March 31st marks 22 years since the passing of one of music’s greatest Latina singers, Selena Quintanilla-Perez.

Simply known as Selena, she had already achieved international fame while being a member of Selena y Los Dinos and soon after her own solo career. She was well on her way to become even more mainstream in America, especially after her Grammy win in 1994, with her English-language crossover album (which she was working on), her clothing line and, most likely, make her mark in Hollywood.

Sadly, Selena’s life was suddenly and tragically cut short on March 31, 1995 when she was shot and killed by her former fan club president at a motel in Corpus Christi, Texas. She was just 23 years old, 17 days shy of her 24th birthday.

Selena’s legacy continues to thrive in the years since she’s been gone: a biopic, starring Jennifer Lopez was released in 1997. There have been a bunch of compilation albums released. In 2016, MAC debuted a limited line of Selena-inspired makeup, and Madame Tussauds immortalized the singer with a wax figure. Later this year, she will be posthumously honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Today, we remember the Queen of Tejano; all that she accomplished within a short period of time, her radiant smile, her fashion, her music, her life, a beautiful person gone way too soon.

RIP Selena

Below are a few of her greatest hits. Enjoy!

More than 20 years after their series finale, the cast of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reunited.

Alfonso Ribeiro, who played Carlton Banks on the hit comedy show, posted a photo with his TV family on his Instagram account, which he wrote: “Always amazing to spend an afternoon with my Fresh Prince family.”

Ribeiro was joined by Daphne Maxwell Reid (Aunt Vivian), Karyn Parsons (Hilary), Tatyana Ali (Ashley), Joseph Marcell (Geoffrey) and, of course, Will Smith.

Sadly, James Avery who played Uncle Phil, passed away in December 2013 at the age of 68.

He was definitely there in spirit.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air ran for six seasons from 1990-1996 on NBC. Daphne Maxwell Reid took over the role of Aunt Vivian during the last three seasons of the show, replacing Janet Hubert-Whitten.

Maybe one day we will get to see an on-screen reunion? Here’s hoping!

Beauty and the Beast continued to dominate the box office this week.

Disney’s live-action version of the animated classic stayed at the top of the charts for a second week, raking in $88.3 million, bringing its worldwide total to $690 million.

Debuting in second place was the Lionsgate film Saban’s Power Rangers, which made $40.5 million.

The action-superhero film is a reboot based on the characters from the 1990s sitcom Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers.
