Céline Dion sang “My Heart Will Go On” Sunday night at the Billboard Music Awards, bringing everyone to tears, including Dion herself.

Her performance was in celebration of the 20th anniversary since the release of both the film Titanic and her signature song, which served as the love theme for the epic blockbuster.

Titanic, directed by James Cameron and starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, opened in theaters on December 19, 1997.

Singer Céline Dion is scheduled to make an appearance at the Billboard Music Awards for a very special performance.

Céline will perform a special tribute to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Titanic, most likely to sing “My Heart Will Go On.”

The song almost never make it into the film: Dion herself has stated in the past that she didn’t want to do another film ballad like she had done for the Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (1991), had to be persuaded by her husband René Angélil to record a demo.

Director James Cameron didn’t want a song at all, but he was eventually won over after composer James Horner played it for him several times.

Most recently, Paramount Pictures chairman Sherry Lansing claimed the song was “corny.”

Little did everyone know then how much of an impact “My Heart Will Go On” would have in the film and music industries.

The single was released on December 8, 1997, eleven days before Titanic opened in theaters.

The song became Céline Dion’s signature song and biggest hit, became one of the best-selling singles, topped the charts in nearly 30 countries and broke the Billboard record for largest radio audience. It won Best Original Song at both the 1998 Golden Globes and Academy Awards and four Grammy awards (Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television) at the 1999 Grammys. It is also ranked at number 14 on AFI’s 100 Years…100 Songs, a list that celebrated the 100 greatest songs in American film history.

It’s kind of hard to imagine how different Titanic would have been without “My Heart Will Go On.”
